Windows 7 has finally surpassed the Windows XP and has become the most used operating system in the world. This is indicated by recent statistics by StatCounter. Windows 7 now owns 41.74% stake in the operating system market, while Windows XP only 39.97%.
Windows 7 is getting more popular over the last one year and has put pressure on an old but still very reliable Windows XP. On the other side Windows Vista is becoming less popular and now has a 11.51% stake, while the operating system Apple Mac OS X was able to grow up a bit. So in September 2010 it had 5.9% share, whereas now it rose to 6.89%.
By the way, the next operating system from Microsoft – Windows 8 should be out until early next year. Therefore the most likely Windows 7 will remain leader for some time (and perhaps they will remain until the Windows 9x).
Recently, Microsoft has pushed companies to move from Windows XP to Windows 7, saying it would not extend the lives of more operating systems – supporting the end of Windows XP is scheduled for April 2014. While many companies have not yet begun the transition.
