Apple launched iMessage service as a part of iOS 5 back in 2011. It is an internet based messaging service that was inspired by BBM (Blackberry Messages). It is useful if a large number of people use iPhone in your circle, otherwise you’ll find limited options in it (just as in the case of BBM). There are a number of apps that allow iOS users to connect with their friends who use other operating systems, through internet messaging for free. We are discussing some of the famous apps here:
1. WhatsApp
WhatsApp is one of the most used apps for internet-based messaging all over the world. In addition to text messaging, it allows users to share photos, location, video or audio clips with people. Officially, WhatApps can be downloaded for iOS, Android, Windows phones, BlackBerry, Series 40, and Symbian.
If you are an iOS user, you have to pay a nominal fee of $0.99/year to use this app. Users of all other operating systems don’t have to pay any charges in first year. From second year they also have to pay the same fee.
2. Viber
Viber is among the top three positions in the list of VoIP of apps. It has about 17 million active users. You can send and receive messages, photos, video and audio clips to a person or a group. A good thing of this app is that it allows you to make Viber-to-Viber free calls.
IOS, Android, and Windows phones users can make maximum use of it, whereas users from other platforms have some limitations. It is free of cost.
3. ChatOn
ChatOn is released by Samsung this year. It has all the options that are present in a internet-based text messaging app. What makes it unique is its support to almost all platforms, if you have a capable browser. So, if you are an iOS user, you can still download to use it.
4. Facebook Messenger
Facebook is the most used social network. Every second person on this planet uses it. Facebook has released its messenger to aid you in sending and receiving private messages. You can also share videos, audios, photos, and you location with it. Users can sign in the messenger using their Facebook id, or phone number.
5. KIK Messenger
It is also a famous free text-messaging app. It contains all the basic features of such an app. “KIK Cards” are a special feature that you can send to your contacts using different services on internet. Officially it is available for iOS, Android, Windows phones, Symbians, and Blackberry. Over 30 million people are using this app actively.
These all apps support more than one platform, and people using different operating systems can use these to communicate.
